HomeNewsWii U Has Best Month of Sales Ever in December Alex Irish January 16, 2015 News Playing their cards right with Super Smash Bros., Pokémon, and amiibo, Nintendo has had a fabulous holiday season, certainly in North America. We already knew that Nintendo had an improved performance in November, and now their December was even better. While Xbox One was the best-selling console that month, the Wii U has celebrated its best months of sales ever, while key games in Nintendo’s arsenal sold millions, and the amiibo line has sold phenomenally well. Wii U hardware sales increased 29% in December over the same time last year, while software numbers were up 75% over December 2013. It’s two biggest releases in 2014, Mario Kart 7 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, have sold 1.7 million and 1.3 million copies respectively. Amiibo sales were said to be twice that much as Smash Bros., which puts them in the ballpark of 2.5 million units. While Wii U sales were up, Nintendo declined to disclose specific numbers. Meanwhile, just like in November, Nintendo continues to not reveal 3DS hardware sale numbers, but their software business is up year over year. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS has now sold 2 million copies in North America, physical and digital copies combined. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, meanwhile, sold a combined total of 2.6 million units in six weeks. Despite all this, it’s pretty unfortunate that Smash Wii U and Mario Kart 8 will never reach the sale numbers as their Wii predecessors. Their Wii predecessors have sold tens of millions of copies, while their console sequels are stuck on a platform that hasn’t yet crossed ten million units (yet). Irregardless, these games just came out last year on a still-growing platform, and they will sell more units for a long time. Nintendo’s Scott Moffit remains positive on Nintendo’s holiday sales, and is optimistic about their 2015 line-up. “Wii U had its strongest year yet thanks to the highly anticipated software lineup and the introduction of the amiibo platform,” he said in the company’s press release. “Fans can anticipate another strong year for 2015, especially with more highly anticipated games like Splatoon and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, as well as New Nintendo 3DS XL, arriving in the first half of 2015.” In the overall scheme of December’s NPD, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U combined made them the 4th best-selling games for the month, and the 6th (and only Nintendo games) to make No.06 on the Top 10 for 2014 overall.
