Splatoon Virtually Sold-Out in Japan, Almost 150,000 Units Sold in First Week

Last week, we learned that Splatoon was an overwhelming, surprising success in its Japanese debut. Having stormed to the top of the charts, it also was said to be sold-out in stores everywhere. In its launch week alone, Splatoon took the No. 1 spot on the Media Create chart with 144, 818 units sold. The Wii U got a similar boost having moved 17,313 units, up from the 7,611 units the week before.

Furthermore, Media Create presented further statistics of Splatoon‘s popularity. The game had a 97.33% sell-through rate in its first four days of release. That’s higher than the previous record holder, Pokémon Diamond at 97.12%. The Splatoon amiibo line had similar sell-outs, moving 106,000 units. This figure includes the 3-Pack with the Squid figurine, as each amiibo counts as one unit.

Splatoon has clearly beaten Nintendo’s expectations out of the gate. We know that the UK launch was also a success, with Splatoon debuting at No. 2 in the Top 10, but we have yet to hear of the North American launch details. Nintendo will certainly continue to service all these players with new content and modes down the line.
