Sony Preparing to Make a Super Mario Bros. Movie

Super Mario Bros. Movie Sony Pictures

In an unexpected turn of events, it has been revealed that Sony Pictures is in preparation of creating a feature film based on Super Mario Bros. after gaining the film production rights from Nintendo.

Sony Pictures was recently hacked, and in a leaked email that was found during the breach, the following information was revealed.

“I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic],” producer Avi Arad told Sony studio chief Amy Pascal in an email dated Oct. 23, 2014, with the subject line “Mario.” Arad then forwarded Pascal separate images of him with Mario Bros.creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the latter of which included the message, “Happy ceo, lets get together, it’s the mother load. [sic]”

Many Nintendo fanatics are quite surprised by this (myself included) considering the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto has jumped into the film production scene himself. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has allowed one of their film IPs to be used in movies however, as Bowser made an appearance in 2012’s Wreck-it-Ralph.

What do you think about Nintendo teaming up with Sony Pictures to create a Super Mario Bros. animated film? Leave a comment with your thoughts below.
