Sonic Boom Returns to 3DS this Fall with Fire & Ice

Despite the low sales and poor critical reception of Sonic Boom‘s first 3DS installment last November, SEGA is not ready to give it up on their Sonic spin-off. Today, SEGA announced a follow-up, entitled Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. Like 2014’s Shattered Crystal, it’s being developed by Sanzaru for the 3DS. This time, the game focuses on mechanics built around the titular fire and ice.

As per the press release:

To create an entirely new experience, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will infuse fire and ice elements throughout gameplay, enabling new abilities to play out in special character moves and interactions with environments. The new title also delivers gameplay that enables players to run through the game at top speed, or take their time with deeper exploration and puzzle play.

Fire & Ice will also incorporate multiplayer, specifically Bot Racing that is tied to the single player. The press release seems to also hint that the game will be streamlined from the exploration-focus of the previous title, in favor of the classic arcade platforming fans of Sonic know and love.

Sonic Boom collectively became the worst-selling Sonic in history last year with both Wii U and 3DS games combined, but the television series (airing on Cartoon Network in the States) has been doing well enough. Perhaps that explains the rush for another Sonic Boom only a year later, albiet with no Wii U game in sight.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will be published by Nintendo, rather than SEGA, this fall. We can only wait to see if Sanzaru has learned some hard lessons from their previous Sonic game.
