Smash Bros. Wii U Debuts at Number 1 in Japan, Wii U Sales Soar

As if you needed further proof of the sales power of Super Smash Bros., the latest entry has premiered in Japan with stellar numbers. According to Japan’s Media Create chart, the Wii U edition of Smash Bros. debuted to sales of 227,527 copies. That’s a stellar debut for a Wii U game. For comparison’s sake, Mario Kart 8 premiered in Japan to 325,892 sales.

Better yet for the Wii U console, Smash Bros. raised sales of the system to 24,469 units, virtually twice that of the week before. The system’s sales were roughly 19,312 when Mario Kart 8 debuted, indicating that more people bought a Wii U for Smash than for Mario Kart. Overall for the week, Wii U sales were in 4th place overall, behind both versions of the New 3DS and the original 3DS (probably due to discounts on that older platform).

It looks like Nintendo’s holiday got a lot brighter thanks to the power of Super Smash Bros. What do you think of these sales in Japan?
