Skylanders Superchargers to Feature Online Adventure Co-Op

Activision has announced that the newest Skylanders edition, Superchargers, will incorporate online multiplayer, a first for the toys-to-life series. In addition to the series’ local multiplayer, online is not only for multiplayer races, but for the main adventure campaign as well.

The racing modes are under development at Beenox, the studio helming the complimentary Wii and 3DS editions. The racing will be available across Wii U, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles and will take place across land, sea, and sky. Online leaderboards will let players track their times in three-lap circuits. The multiplayer racing action will be available to all Starter Packs, with six tracks available out of the box.

It’s important to note that when playing with strangers online, voice chat will not be available. This will come as a relief to parents among the series’ young demographic. Also no word on whether the 3DS version will have online racing as well (the Wii version is unlikely to due to the shutdown of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and limited system resources).

Skylanders Superchargers will launch on September 20th. The Wii U and Wii/3DS editions are noteworthy as their Starter Packs include a special Nintendo character figure and vehicle. Bowser and his Koopa car are packed in the Wii and 3DS editions while Donkey Kong is a Wii U exclusive, and all these figures can be used as Skylanders figures or as standard amiibo.
