Pokémon Sun And Moon Sold 14 Million Copies Since November 2016

Nintendo reports that Pokémon Sun and Moon have sold 14.69 million units worldwide since November 2016. This rapid pace of sales places Pokémon Sun and Moon as the fastest-selling Nintendo titles in the publisher’s history, and among the best-selling in the Pokémon series.

Sun and Moon have already outsold entries like 2010’s Pokémon Black/White and 2014’s Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire and on pace to outsell 2013’s X/Y. Nintendo had already shipped 10 million copies of Sun/Moon prior to their November 18th launch in North America and Japan.

Nintendo credits Sun and Moon’s rapid success to a combination of Pokémon’s much-publicized 20th anniversary in 2016 and Pokémon Go reintroducing the brand to lapsed or new players.

Celebrations of the Pokémon series’ 20th anniversary that began at the start of 2016, plus the incredible buzz around the smart-device application Pokémon GO in July drew attention to the brand and set the stage for this growth in sales. We believe these activities correlated with the increase in the ratio of players in their 20s and 30s and the acquisition and reactivation of new consumers.

For reference, here’s a complete list of core series Pokémon games and their lifetime sales (via Joe Merrick of serebii.net):

  • Green, Red & Blue: ~30 million (Pre-Virtual Console)
  • Yellow: 8.86 million (Pre-Virtual Console)
  • Gold & Silver: 23 million
  • Crystal: 3.85 million
  • Ruby & Sapphire: 16.22 million
  • FireRed & LeafGreen: 11.82 million
  • Emerald: 6.32 million
  • Diamond & Pearl: 17.64 million
  • Platinum: 7.69 million
  • HeartGold & SoulSilver: 12.72 million
  • Black & White: 15.62 million
  • Black 2 & White 2: 7.97 million
  • X & Y: 16.06 million
  • Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire: 13.68 million
  • Sun & Moon: 14.62 million

Pokémon Sun and Moon also drove 3DS hardware sales up in the third quarter year-over-year by a significant margin. Per Nintendo:

For the first two quarters, both hardware and software maintained lower trends than the previous year, but for the third quarter, which also includes the holiday period, the release of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon drove software sales higher than the previous year, and hardware sales did not lose momentum.

Within the pantheon of  best-selling 3DS software, Pokémon X and Y remain the sales champion, having sold 16 million copies worldwide since October 12th 2013. Mario Kart 7 is number 2, with Pokémon Sun and Moon clawing its way up at the number 3 slot. Pokémon X and Y sold 1.2 million units in fiscal year 2017, up year-over-year, again thanks to Pokémon Go.
