Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Sell 3 Million Copies Since Launch Worldwide

Pokemon Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire Commercial

Pokémon remains a monster hit in video games, and the latest remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are a testament to this staying power. Their incredible sales success since launching November 21st even surpasses the latest Super Smash Bros. Across North America and Japan, the remakes combined forces to sell around 3 million copies.

The two games debuted at the top of Japanese sales charts with 1.5 million, including standalone and combo pack versions, not even accounting for digital sales. According to Famitsu, the 3 million stems from North America’s debut numbers as well, meaning that the remakes sold around 1.54 million in the States.

For reference, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was said to have sold 490,000 copies in North America alone, indicating that for many, Pokémon is the safer bet. Especially for parents buying for their kids, perhaps put off by Smash Bros’ comic violence and larger price tag. Not only that, but the lower sell-through of the Wii U compared to the 3DS also possibly played a role in Pokémon’s comparative success.

For these first few days of sales, Pokémon has once again asserted its permanence in the video game landscape. Did you happen to pick up a copy of either/both Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire?
