Nintendo Appoints New President/CEO, Tatsumi Kimishima

Following the untimely death of Satoru Iwata, Nintendo Co. Ltd. has appointed their fifth company president. Tatsumi Kimishima will take reign of the company effective September 16th. He’ll be taking the position on the heels of interim leaders Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda.

Despite the appointment to power, Kimishima has announced that the company will not deviate from Mr. Iwata’s overall strategy. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, he identifies the company’s new challenge as identifying new projects and cultivating new talent in order to reach Nintendo-like profits again.

Although neither Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Takeda will be taking the presidency, they have been appointed as fellow partners to Kimishima, the “Creative Fellow” and “Technology Fellow” respectively.

65 year old Tatsumi Kimishima got his start at Sanwa Bank in 1973. He was in charge of Nintendo’s Human Resources Division, was Representative Director for The Pokémon Company in the early 2000’s, and was President of Nintendo of America from 2002 until 2006, where he oversaw the launch of the Wii before turning over the position to Reggie Fils-Aime.

In an interview with Nikkei, however, Kimishima noted that Satoru Iwata did not leave instructions for how to run the company. He also pointed out that he was appointed only for one year, hence he will be establishing a future-proof group-based leadership inside Nintendo over that time.

Tatsumi Kimishima comes into leadership on the heels of a major transition at Nintendo. Before Satoru Iwata’s passing, the company partnered with Universal Parks to bring Nintendo IPs to new attractions, and especially with DeNA to produce five mobile titles starting in the fall 2015.
