Nintendo 2DS Sales Surge 500% Year-Over-Year For August 2016

Nintendo 2DS

The Nintendo 3DS family continued its sales streak from July into August 2016 as sales of the 3DS family were up 83% year over year in North America. The 2DS in particular saw a sales bump of 500% from the same time last year.

Contributing to this growth was a recent price drop to $79.99 and the continued popularity of Pokémon Go and, in Nintendo’s words, “excitement for the Pokémon brand”. As a result, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire re-entered the software charts, up 37% from August 2015.

Impressively, Wii U software sales were also up 30% year over year, undoubtedly on the heels of additional Nintendo Selects options from that month, with games like Nintendo Land and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD now priced at $19.99.

Nintendo’s commitment to the growing 3DS audience remains solvent. A Nintendo Direct earlier this month put all the focus on 3DS games launching this year and in 2017, with Pokémon Sun and Moon leading the charge. The 3DS family has sold over 60 million units worldwide to date, with the 2DS launching in Japan as a regular retail option this month.
