Animal Crossing: New Leaf Monthly Update – December 2013

Hi guys, I’m Nick and this is my first article with Always Nintendo. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is probably my favorite game on the Nintendo 3DS, and that is in no small part due to the wide variety of special events that take place each month, and the collecting of rare items you can only get at these events. So I’ve decided to update every month with the variety of events and seasonal changes that will happen in the game(in North America, primarily), so you won’t miss all the good stuff in your town! Without further ado, here’s the December update:

December is of course the prime of the holiday season here in North America and elsewhere, so there’s a few ways to prepare for the festivities.

  • Nooklings’ shop will now sell festive items in place of fortune cookies sometimes. These festive items include glow wands, poppers, and other shiny and flashy things you’ll need to ring in the new year at the end of the month.
  • Able Sister’s and Kick’s are now selling Santa clothing, piece by piece. You can get Santa’s hat, pants, jacket, boots, and beard. You will NEED ALL these items to participate properly on Toy Day(Dec 24th) so watch out for them!
  • Nooklings’ will also be selling festive furniture, the Jingle set! You can only obtain this set this month, and it might get you in the mood for Toy Day, so watch out for these as well.
  • Also in preparation for Toy Day, your villagers will be dropping hints about what they want for Toy Day from Santa(thats you!) so keep an ear out for their hints. (i.e. Derwin in my town wants “something Black”, you WILL receive all the gifts you need to give from Jingle, as long as you collect all the Santa clothes, you’ll just need to show up on Toy Day and pass the gifts out.)
  • Lastly, you will start to find Snowflakes around town, when you see snow flurries. You can catch them with a net and keep them in your inventory, but you can’t store them in your home. Their use is a mystery to me, they only sell for 500 bells. But it’s a nice touch so nab one for yourself just in case!

Now, that’s a lot to take in so far, but there’s more! The specific events to watch out for are these:

Tuesday, Dec. 10th should bring rough weather to North America. Blizzards are predicted! But that’s okay because that will lead to…

Wednesday, Dec. 11th …the snowy season begins! From now until Dec. 30th, you may see snow blanketing the ground, and more flurries in the air. The aurora season also begins this day, so be sure to look up between 8:45 p.m. and 11 p.m. to see if you c an catch an aurora borealis in your town. Aurora season lasts through late February, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities. Last but not least(it’s a big day!) this day also begins the snowball season. You’ll start to see snowballs on the ground. Roll these over snow and they’ll get bigger, roll them on the plaza and they will get smaller. Now, when you roll one snowball onto another, you’ll make Snow People! You can get a Snowman, Snowboy, Snowmam, and Snowtyke, and can get them multiple times. They each will give you a different set of items if you can make they look proportional, and there are a LOT of unique items they give, so try it a few times.

Saturday, Dec. 14th is the Fishing Tourney this month. This event is not specific to December, but you can get nice, exclusive furniture items from doing well in the tourney, so make sure to participate. The tourney runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and this month, any fish is eligible for winning.

Sunday, Dec. 15th you will start to see lights strung up on your pine trees. If you don’t have many pine trees, maybe it’s time to plant a few to make your town look extra-festive.

Saturday, Dec. 21st will be the Winter Solstice this year. Isabelle will take the day off and you can find her in the plaza, handing out Blue Light sticks! Be sure to get yours between 6 a.m. and midnight.

Tuesday, Dec. 24th will be… Toy Day! At last, the big day! There’s a lot to do this day so set aside an hour to be sure you can get it all done. First off, you’ll get a special item from your parents in the mail. They’re so thoughtful! At 6 p.m. you’ll find Jingle, a special holiday character, in your Plaza. Talk to him and he’ll remind you to get your Santa gear on. Once you’re dressed in all the Santa clothes, he’ll give you a sack with gifts for the villagers. You’ll have enough for everybody, and if you get them EXACTLY what they hinted for, you’ll get a bonus prize in the mail (I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but this is the only way you can get this one-of-a-kind item!). The villagers will take whatever you give them though, so choose wisely. Once you’re done giving all the gifts, talk to Jingle again and receive one piece of the holiday furniture sets.

Finally, Tuesday, Dec. 31st will be the day of the countdown. Isabelle will be in the plaza handing out unique gifts, and Redd will be selling party hats, both between 6 a.m. and midnight. The countdown begins at 11:30 and lasts until 2 a.m., so if you have no plans to bring in the new year, cozy up by the fire and enjoy the night in your town.

That’s all for this edition of New Leaf Monthly. I primarily get my information from thonky.com, so if you want the specifics on the rare items you can get this month, check there. His information is usually correct, with some differences because he translated from a japanese copy of the game. I hope this has been helpful, and hope I can continue to bring updates month-by-month. Let me know if you have questions, comments or concerns in the comment box below. Thanks for reading!
