Miyamoto Will Not Be Highly Involved in NX Hardware Development

Historically, Shigeru Miyamoto has been a guiding force behind Nintendo’s hardware, be it the Nintendo 64’s analog stick or the GameCube’s and Wii’s controllers. With the upcoming NX platform, he will be pulling back from the hardware’s creation. In an interview with Fortune, Miyamoto explained that rather than focus on the NX’s hardware, he will stick to designing software.

I’ve pulled myself back out of some of the hardware section and I’m really focused on some of the software that I’m involved in-for example, the new Star Fox game. Of course I am observing and looking at the hardware, but I am not actively participating and making decisions.

The NX is reportedly slated for a 2016 reveal, with no launch date in sight as of yet. Currently, Shigeru Miyamoto is guiding the development of Star Fox Zero and Super Mario Maker, both games designed to promote the Wii U GamePad.
