Miiverse Update for 3DS Coming Soon

Rumors have been flying ever since Nintendo announced extended maintenance on their eShops, taking place today. Then, renowned Nintendo leaker, Emily Rogers tweets this yesterday:

Miiverse/NNID/shared eshop balances after maintenance. RT @Eric_Silver Is it against the law to just tell people its Miiverse?

Combined with the fact that our last Nintendo Direct confirmed we would be seeing Miiverse on our 3DS’s sometime in December, it looks promising that this is the update that will do it.

For those who don’t have a Wii-U and aren’t familiar with Miiverse, Miiverse is Nintendo’s version of a social network, accessible by their consoles and online at https://miiverse.nintendo.net/. Using a Nintendo Network ID, or “NNID”, users can press the Home button on their console and access Miiverse while their game is still running. This allows you to view and submit posts to “communities” assigned to each game. Stuck on a level? Post to miiverse and ask for help, another user can reply to your post with helpful tips. Love a part of a game you’re in? Post and view other’s reactions.

In addition to the Miiverse integration, eShop wallets between 3DS and Wii-U are supposed to be integrated through the combined NNID’s as well. This means your eShop gift cards will go to one unified wallet, where you can split funds between Wii-U games and 3DS games alike.

Many are thinking: “Yes! Now my digital purchases are tied to an account!” … but that’s not necessarily true yet. Nintendo has stated before that this integrated account system will only track your eShop wallet for now, it will NOT record your digital purchases for safekeeping in case your system breaks or gets lost/stolen. Another feature that we know will be absent from the update is the ability to send messages directly, peer-to-peer, between NNID profiles. This feature is available on the Wii-U’s version of Miiverse, but will not be available to 3DS users yet. With the recent Swapnote scandal and the loss of the Spotpass feature for that messaging system, the 3DS could really use a more efficient way to send messages directly to friends right now.

This is a big step in the right direction though, and if these rumors and leaks prove to be true,  you can expect to have these new features on your 3DS by later tonight, 8 p.m. PST.

  • Nicholas Harvey Burbach

Yup, I’m over here on the east coast and I think it’ll be about midnight when it’s over. I hope the rumors are true, otherwise I don’t know why they’d need to do maintenance for this long!

  • Well I hope the wait is worth it :D I’m still kind of bummed about not being able to add people

  • Michael

Maybe they’re secretly adding in linked accounts!!!! Ahh, a boy can dream can’t he?

  • That would be pretty funny if Nintendo did that. But maybe they’re planning it for a future update so that they can keep things interesting in the future. That would be my strategy :D

  • C_L_Clark

does this mean … wii u friends are accessible from the 3ds?

  • We can only hope :D Remember, not a lot of screenshots have been shown so there’s a lot to be left to the imagination. We’ll see around 8PM PST so just a bit longer!
