Mario as a Shooter?

Mario with a Projectile!

Splatoon is a fresh take on the shooter genre, not only for Nintendo, given their lack of content in within the genre, but also in general. It’s spunky, colorful, modern, simple, and most ironically, non-violent.  Being an entirely new IP, however, has actually been one of it’s main hype factors, and yet, according to Shigeru Miyamoto, it was this close to being a Mario title.  That’s right, a Mario with a projectile

…perhaps not too far-fetched

Directly from the latest issue of EDGE magazine, Miyamoto said:

There were heated debates over who the main player character should be. Whether it should be Mario, or a squid. When we talked about the possibility of it being Mario, of course we could think of the advantages: anybody would be willing to touch it as soon as we announced that we had the new Mario game. But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn’t be able to create any new IP.

The advantages/disadvantages angle on this issue may be a huge understatement.  Mario IP is no small-quibble, and how he is defined, viewed, and categorized by customers, competition, outsiders, and the industry as a whole, plays a crucial element in Nintendo’s overall success and future direction.  Let’s not forget that Super Mario Galaxy, musically, visually, and gameplay-wise, was an attempt at making Mario cool again due to Nintendo’s overly kiddy image, 3D Mario’s low sales, and the Sunshine era leaving us with an amusement-themed park impression of him.  Could a shooter spin-off have done what Galaxy did for the plumber’s reputation?  That being said, if it struck gold, and paved the way for future sequels, would we then be left with yet another over-saturated conundrum of Mario titles?

It’s a tough choice, but it looks like fresh IP is what Nintendo valued this time.  What do you think?
