Iwata: Nintendo Wants to “Surprise” Players with NX

Last week, Nintendo teased the world with their upcoming dedicated hardware, so far code-named the NX. However, we know very little about the machine, or whether it’ll be a portable or console. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated it would be “a brand-new concept”, and now he’s said a tad more on the matter.

In an interview with Nikke, Iwata said that the NX aims to surprise game players and change their lives, so to speak.

However, if you only expand upon existing hardware, it’s dull. In some shape or form, we’re always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person’s video gaming life.

If you were hoping for a new Nintendo console akin to the PS4 or Xbox One, you’d better adjust your expectations. From what Iwata speaks of, it sounds like Nintendo will not abandon their desire for the outrageous and extraordinary. The Wii was a successful example of this principle, but the Wii U is clearly not. Many feel that the GamePad was only a gimmick for the sake of a gimmick. If nothing else, Nintendo needs to make their next hardware clear to consumers and not muddle the message.

Hopefully, this platform will delight and amuse, and not confuse like the Wii U did upon its reveal in 2011. What would you like to see from the NX?
