HomeOpinionNano Gems #6: Nintendo’s Overlooked Treasures Roberto Pallas November 23, 2014 Opinion Nintendo Drugs, Genderless Toads, DK Bongos Comeback, and More… It’s been a while but this time we’ve got a great selection of quirky oddities and rarities. Everything from Metroid shoes, to Nintendo drugs and of course Charles Martinet’s Instagram adventures! Let’s go! Nano-Gems #6 1. Gamecube Controller Mod for your Nintendo 2DS In case you haven’t heard, there is a shortage of gamecube controller adapters for Wii U’s new Smash Bros. Yes, a controller from almost 15 years ago, covering 2 console generations, is causing fans to pay an upward of $90 for a peripheral that normally retails at $20. Of course, if you’re desperate to use the darn thing then the next best thing is break out the portable Smash Bros. and follow the same path as the fan below who has made the controller possible on the 2DS without a peripheral. 2. Metroid, Shoes, and Smash When all three combine, in addition to a savvy and loving diehard girlfriend, you get the creation that appears below. Nothing beats custom made. 3. DK Bongo Gamecube Controller “Returns” Below you can see a setup of the novel DK Bongo controllers once used for the Donkey Kong rhythm games on Gamecube. It’s fitting to see such a “return” for the controller when the “Donkey Kong Country Returns” installment makes it’s own fresh debut on the latest Smash Bros. Considering his Final Smash hasn’t changed from Brawl it will be refreshing to give this one a go once I actually get my hands on a used set from ebay! 4. Genderless Toads Toads are the not-so-well-known citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Toadstool. They’re extremely cute, nimble, frigid, curious, and accident-prone, but they are always ready to assist Mario whether with a secret star in hand, binoculars, or helpful hints. A recent interview has some people up in arms however on account of their genderless origins. In an interview with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, producer Koichi Hayashida explains: This is maybe a little bit of a strange story, but we never really went out of our way to decide on the sex of these characters, even though they have somewhat gendered appearances. But I think what I can say is that Toadette and Toad are not siblings — perhaps it would be more accurate to say they are adventure pals. And that’s certainly true here. Given the sexually-charged climate of the game industry as of late I would actually say it’s safe to say that this is a good thing! Perhaps we need more genderless protagonists so as to deter any bickering between the sexes and would it hurt to do the same for race-less characters too? Though we do have Kirby for that, let alone every single Pokémon. As a matter of fact, Pikachu is both sex-less and race-less! Not to mention age-less! 5. F-Zero Remake for Mario Kart Re-made for F-Zero Mario Kart 8’s latest DLC installment once again does not fail to visually deliver, and the Mute City track from F-Zero is probably the best example of that. It’s extremely refreshing for fans of the series as the franchise has been on hold since its apex on the Gamecube. YouTube user Uchiha Madao has decided to end that drought the only way he knows how. He’s using the 64DD Expansion Kit from F-Zero for the N64 and is replicating the track on N64’s hardware. Let’s take a look. However, Madao explains that it is not a perfect replica: It was pretty fun and odd rebuilding this track because just last year i never thought I’d be rebuilding a Mute City track that didn’t come from an F-Zero game. This track turned out pretty well but I had to tweak some parts because FZX’s physics are more dangerous (the part where the cylinder joins the track is upside down and that is insta-death in FZX normally). 6. Nintendo Drugs I’m not actually happy to report this story, but it is fascinating nonetheless. The branding of a powerful pill form of the drug ecstasy, known as Yellow Peril, has now taken the moniker of “Nintendos” to appeal to a more edgy and imaginative, younger, audience. Mirror Online reports that several youths have already fallen victim to the drug. Thankful the story hasn’t been overblown to shed negative light on a company which is known for the exact opposite stigma; one of lightheartedness and parent-conscientiousness. 7. Smash Bros. on your Calculator We actually just covered this recently but in case you missed it you can check it out now. Just as the title says its Smash for your calculator! The game boasts graphics below even that of the NES, has the most inconvenient controls possible, BUT, you can be the envy of all your classmates during Math class! 8. Charles Martinet Makes a Comi-Con Appearance He’s becoming a regular on this Nano-Gems series, but rightly so! He has not given up his instagram adventures and has now dropped into Comic-Con! #charlesmartinet #charlesmartinetitsame #starwars #mariobros #lamole #woohoo A post shared by Charles Martinet (@charlesmartinetitsame) on Nov 10, 2014 at 12:21pm PST We Want to Know What Do You Think!
