GameStop Talks Up “Incredibly Strong” Switch Demand

As the Nintendo Switch continues its successful launch tour, retailer GameStop is particularly bullish on the console’s prospects. In a call with investors, company COO Tony Bartel discussed the system’s positive start, citing such demand that leads to sell-outs within hours of shipments. In fact, Bartel expects them to be chasing Switch stock for the entire year.

And how great is this demand for the Switch? GameStop CEO Paul Raines believes the demand is comparable to that of the PlayStation 4, with the ability to appeal to all manner of players as the Wii did.

“Purchase intent for Switch and Scorpio is at PS4 levels or higher. Just a note on the Switch launch: We have had a very successful launch so far, with high attach rates of software, particularly Zelda and related addons. The Switch has provided a dramatic lift in traffic in-store, and has real potential to be Wii-like in its potential to expand the gaming category from core to broad audiences.”

These comments reflect continued sentiments towards the success of the Switch. GameStop’s Eric Bright previously said that the Switch could outsell the Wii eventually, on top of the Switch’s accessory sales being as good as those of the console and Breath of the Wild.

As GameStop’s finances for the year show an 8.1 percent drop in global sales, and a 30 percent drop in new hardware sales, the company would benefit from positive sales from hardware they sell in-store, as with the Switch.
