HomeNewsAnalysts Think NX will be Social VR Platform Alex Irish July 28, 2015 News Nintendo’s NX is not due until 2016, and already people are speculating. Analyst firm Digi-Capital believes that based on past evidence, the NX could be built around social virtual reality (VR). It would not be unlike the concept behind Oculus Rift, but would instead be designed to be more social, akin to the Wii and its disruptive motion controls. Digi-Captial’s analysis rules out the possibility of another second screen console, as seen with the Wii U’s disappointing sales, nor will Nintendo try to compete in a “red ocean” with Microsoft and Sony. They also suspect that the social VR-based NX could utilize smart devices as “non-gamer friendly” controllers, therefore reducing the overall cost of admission. Finally, the NX could be equal to or less powerful than Xbox One and PS4, again going along with Nintnedo’s recent console strategy. Nintendo recently disavowed VR as “not fun”. Reggie Fils-Aime said of VR, “What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social. I haven’t walked the floor, so I can’t say in terms of what’s on the floor today, but at least based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun, and it’s not social. It’s just tech.” Shigeru Miyamoto backed up these claims: “The current types of virtual reality aren’t really a good fit for Nintendo’s philosophy of trying to create entertainment that people can play together in the living room. We’re constantly looking at different technology and experimenting with different elements of it, but we’re not feeling virtual reality is currently in a place where it’s ready to be released – as a product that fits with our philosophy of fitting in the living room.” The late Satoru Iwata promised the NX would be “delivered through a very Nintendo-like solution”. Meanwhile, Digi-Capital forcasts VR and AR as generating $150 billion by 2020, with companies like Facebook and Microsoft leading the charge. All of this is speculation for now, so the NX remains a mystery until its reveal in 2016. Share this post: No related posts.
